Johnny Weir Comes Out of The Closet in His New Autobiography

Flamboyant Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir comes out of the closet in his new autobiography which excerpt is published on People. "In a sexual way, I'm gay, but I would marry a woman tomorrow if it struck me. I don't think sex and relationships necessarily have to go together," the 26-year-old who refuses to be labeled said.

He's taking the cue to go public with his sexuality from the recent trend of bullying closeted gays. "With people killing themselves and being scared into the closet, I hope that even just one person can gain strength from my story," he said about his new book which is titled "Welcome to My World".

In the book, Weir wrote, "I'm not ashamed to be me. More than anyone else I know, I love my life and accept myself. What's wrong with being unique? I am proud of everything that I am and will become." He added that being gay "is the smallest part of what makes me me."

In fact Weir had been mistaken as a girl when he was a child, and the then-6-year-old would be attracted to Richard Gere in "Pretty Woman" instead of Julia Roberts. In High School Weir would be called demeaning names like "faggot" and "homo" but he found sanctuary in skating. "By puberty, I knew that I was gay," he wrote. "But I didn't worry about it much. As a serious skater, I was way too busy."

He went on addressing the media scrutiny over his sexuality, saying "A lot of the gays got downright angry about my silence. But pressure is the last thing that would make me want to 'join' a community." He revealed that a lot of websites for gays thought he was a jerk for not admitting he's different.

"Welcome to My World" will be released on Tuesday, January 11. Weir will go on a national book tour in New York the same day. The three-time U.S. champion is taking residency and break in Russia but would be back on the rink for Sochi Olympics in 2014.

Funnyman Billy Connolly Has Paid Tribute to His Friend

Funnyman Billy Connolly has paid tribute to his friend and former singing partner Gerry Rafferty, hailing the late musician as "a true genius". Rafferty joined the Scottish comedian's folk group the Humblebums before rising to fame in the 1970s with "Stealers Wheel".

He passed away from liver failure on Tuesday, January 4 after a long battle with alcoholism, and Connolly has now spoken out to pay his respects to his pal. I was privileged to have spent my formative years working with Gerry and there remained a strong bond of friendship between us that lasted until his untimely death. Gerry had extraordinary gifts and his premature passing deprives the world of a true genius."

Scottish singing duo The Proclaimers, who Rafferty worked with in his role as a producer in the 1980s, have also honored the late musician. They say, "He was exceptional when we worked together and very kind to us. As well as a great songwriter he was a really, really good singer with fantastic harmony ideas. The fact that as well as producing Letter From America, he sang backing harmonies on it meant a lot to us. A great guy, a fantastic songwriter, Gerry will be sorely missed and we are greatly saddened at the news."

Swedish actor Per Oscarsson is feared dead after a fire set his home ablaze on Friday, December 31, according to the Associated Press. Police spokesman Jan Strommegard says the remains of one person were found on Sunday, January 2 in the ashes of the house in Skara, which are believed to be those of the 83-year-old actor or his wife, 67-year-old Kia Ostling.

Both were reported missing by their relatives who say the couple apparently was home when the fire destroyed the house early Friday morning. The cause of the fire was unknown as WENN went to press.

Oscarsson began making movies in the 1940s and won the best actor award at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival for his role in "Hunger". He also played Holger Palmgren, Lisbeth Salander's late lawyer and guardian, in "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest".

Isabelle Caro, the French model who gave anorexia a face, has died. She was just 28. Caro passed away on November 17 after battling the eating disorder for almost 15 years.

She shocked and stunned the world in 2007 when she posed naked for an anorexia awareness campaign billboard shot by Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani. Caro had just returned from a job in Japan when she died in her native France, according to the Associated Press.

According to her boyfriend, Swiss singer Vincent Bigler, Caro spent about two weeks in hospital with acute respiratory disease before her passing. He said that he did not know the cause of death though.

Many people, including Jessica Simpson, were moved by her work to raise awareness for Anorexia. "To us, what you're doing right now makes you one of the most beautiful people that we have ever seen," Jessica once said. "And we really just appreciate you sitting in front of us and having such powerful words. God bless you."
